Reading Notes: The Princes and the Water Sprite -A king had three sons who were named: Stars, Moon, and Sun -The King promised the Queen a boon when the third son was born -The Queen waited until the third son's 21st birthday to cash in her boon. -She asked the King to give the Kingdom to Sun, but he refused because it belonged to the eldest. -Out of fear for his sons, he sent the two eldest to exile, but the third joined them -Out in the wilderness, the third son went down to a pond to gather water for them -This pond was run by water sprites and before they let anyone take their water they asked, "What are Good Fairies Like?' -The Sun answered wrong and the water sprite carried him to her cave -The middle brother went down to check on him, but he also answered wrong and was carried away -The eldest brother went to see what was going on and the water sprite tried to trick him, but he was too wise -He correctly answered the question and the water sprite said he ...

Reading Notes: The Ox Who Envied the Pig -There were two ox who were brothers and they worked on a farm -On the farm, the daughter was about to get married, and the family made plans to fatten the pig for the wedding feast -The big brother ox was upset and felt slighted because the pig ate all of the good food while he and his brother ate only straw -The older pig was also mad because the pig was lazy and they did all the work -The younger brother reminded his older brother that he should not be jealous because the pig was being fattened for slaughter -Not to much later, the pig was killed -The moral of the story is that indulgence can lead to the path of death. It seems good for a while, but in the end it will hurt you Be Content

Avenging His Friends Reading Notes: The Crab and The Crane -There was a summer when there was no rain and little water -The animals all suffered -The fish in a pond had very little water and the crane sat and watched them -The crane told the fishes about a pond in the forest that he knew had a lot of water in it -The fishes did not trust him, so they sent one fish with him to check out the pond -They went back and the fish told all the other fish about the pond and they all agreed to go one by one. -The crane began taking them one by one, but he broke their trust and ate each fish one by one -He went back to see if there were any fish, but there was only a crab left -The crane wanted to take the crab as he did the fish, so the crab went, bu the crab was afraid of falling, so he used is claws to hold onto the crane's neck -The crane asked the crab to get off in the place where he had eaten the fish, but the crab snapped his neck before he could eat him.

Reading Notes: The Ox Who Won the Forfeit -A man owned a very strong ox -He made a pricey bet on the ox -He verbally abused the ox and tried to make him pull the carts for the bet -The ox did not respond to this sort of talk and would not budge -The man paid the debt and went home very sad -That night the man and his ox talked about the way that he spoke to him and the man agreed that he would never treat him that way again -The two of them went into town the next day and doubled the owner's money The Man and His Ox

Reading Notes: Grannie's Blackie by Ellen C. Babbitt -An old woman was gifted at elephant -The elephant was named "Grannie's Blackie" -The elephant always played with all of the kids, but never worked -Blackie wanted Grannie to come play, but she had to work -Blackie thought it would be a good idea for him to work too -Blackie found a job down at the river helping pull carts -The man tried to underpay Blackie, but he would not leave without proper pay -Blackie returned home with the money and Grannie was very pleased                                                       The Playful Elephant Named Blackie    

Reading Notes: The Quarrel of The Quails by Ellen C. Babbitt -There were a group of quails living in a forest and the wisest was the leader -A man lived near the forest and he liked to catch the quails and sell them in town -The wise Quail came up with a plan to escape the net of the fowler -The fowler and his wife were angry that he had not been making any money -The quails began to argue and they took sides -Because they were divided, they were not able to escape the net and they were sold at the market                                                                   The Wise Quail Leader    

Reading Notes for The King's White Elephant by Ellen C. Babbitt -Carpenters who lived on the river bank would go by boat into the forest daily to cut down trees for lumber -One day an elephant approached the carpenters and was limping. They removed a splinter from his foot and washed out the wound -Because they had helped him, the elephant wanted to repay them. -He helped pull down trees, move the lumber, and move their tools. -In turn, the carpenters fed him well all day -The old elephant had a son who was all white. He wanted to teach his son how to help the men -The white elephant helped the men and was fed by the men -After working all day, the white elephant liked to play in the water with the carpenters' children -One day the King came and saw the carpenters and he saw the white elephant -He paid a large price to the carpenters and took the white elephant as his own and took care of him every day.                     ...

Reading Notes for The Sandy Road by Ellen C. Babbitt -There is a merchant. He and his team travel by night on the desert sand because it is too hot during the day. -One man knows the stars and he is the driver -They stopped at the break of day to eat and lay down to rest -They traveled this way for many days -One man suggested they throw out their water and food since they were approaching the city -That night, the driver fell asleep and the oxen turned back. They ended up in the same place. -They had no food or water -The merchant went in search of water for his men -He came upon a tuft of grass and began digging -There they found a rock that they knew had water beneath it -They struck the rock and found a well of water -They drank and bathed in the water and then headed to the city to sell their goods -They then returned home                                         ...

Reading Notes for: How the Turtle Saved His Own Life by Ellen C. Babbitt -The King had a place in his courtyard for his sons to swim in -One day the King has fish put in this lake -The princes like the fish, but there is also a turtle and the boys have never seen one before and think it is a demon -The king has the "demon" captured -An old man suggests that they throw it into another lake so that it will surely be killed -The turtle asks what he has done to deserve this -When the king heard the turtle talk he ordered him to be thrown into the lake at once -The turtle is happy to be thrown in to the lake because he can swim and is now in his old home                                                   This Turtle Was Able to Return Home                               ...

Reading Notes for The Measure of Rice by Ellen C. Babbitt -Dishonest King -The King has someone that sets prices for everything, this man is honest -He knew he could make more money if this man weren't honest, so he replaced him -This man charged more and people had to sell their possessions in order to purchase -A horse dealer is ripped off and he goes to see the original man in the position -The horse dealer wants to get back at them, so he takes his small cup of rice and states that it much be of great value because of all the horses he traded for it (500 horses) -The man says that his rice is worth the entire city -The pricing man is laughed out of the city for saying that it is only worth a cup of rice                                                         The Most Expensive Cup of Rice    

Reading Notes for Why the Owl is Not King of the Birds  by Ellen C. Babbitt -Emnity between crows and owls -The birds wanted a king -They wanted an Owl as king -The crow said the owl did not look happy enough to be a king -From this point on, crows and owls have fought -A turtle dove was chosen to be king                                                                                                                 The Turtle Dove Was Crowned King                                                    

Reading Notes for The Turtle Who Couldn't Stop Talking -The turtle lived at the pond -The two geese are hungry -They offer the turtle a ride to their beautiful home -He must keep his mouth shut and not tell anyone -They both carry him by a stick in his mouth -People see this occurrence and laugh at the scene -The turtle opens his mouth to tell them to stop and falls from the stick -The turtle dies                                               This Turtle Looks Like He Has a lot to Say                                                  

Part B CA Kincaid -The Pandavas are preparing for a year in disguise in the forest. -They all take on different names and professions. -There is a lot of death -The Pandavas win and are able to reveal their true identities to the King -In a dispute, Duryodhana suggests that the Pandavas spend another 12 years in exile in the forest. -Duryodhana is afraid of the Pandavas and will not come out from hiding to face them and he dies. -It is decided that the Pandavas time has come and they must leave the earth. These are reading notes for Part A of  The Mahabharata by C. A. Kincaid. -This talks about the 100 sons and the 5 Pandava brothers -They are all dependents of a king -The Pandavas were good students and the 100 sons were jealous -Talks about the Pandavas escaping the big fire by tunneling -The evil guy is very happy because he thinks the Pandavas perished, but it was really the low caste people who were drunk.            -This is the evil plot of someone who just seems jealous of the Pandavas -A daughter must marry all 5 Pandava sons, there are 5 weddings. -In these stories there are a lot of competition and jealousy. - I will rewrite this with the characters constantly competing and being mischievous. Reading Notes for Mourning , which I found on PDE Mahabharata -A person on the battlefield has just lost 100 sons -A lot of people were mourning the lost lives of their family members. -Kunti's 5 sons were still alive, but they mourned the dead together -The dead were prepared for burial with perfumed linen and then burned -New people were brought in to be rulers -I would like to rewrite this story to go on my website, but I am having trouble thinking of a way that I could use the humor from Friends and still pay due respect to the Mahabharata.                                                                Mourning of the Dead                            

The Cattle Raid: Found on PDE Mahabharata -There is a raid to capture people -They had a divisive plan -Uttara wanted to flee because the battle got hard, but he was forced to stay in battle -The man who forced him to stay produces his own weapons -They are related to the Pandavas -One man took a Pandava girl in marriage -I would like to write this in conjunction with the story with the B section A Photo of the Cattle Raid

The House of Fire: Found at PDE Mahabharata -There is a cruel plot -They are all in danger -There seem to almost be "cliques" within the ruling people -No one but Prince Y notice that the palace is going to be burned down -They try to foil the plan and come up with an escape route -Some other people come in -The citizens think that everyone dies -The end alludes that they died in the fire This Shows The Pandavas Escaping

Reading Notes for Kunti and Her Son -This story reminds me a lot of the story from the bible when Moses' mother fears for her son's life and puts him in a basket down the river and he is found by Pharaoh's daughter and she adopts him and brings in an Israelite woman (who happens to be the baby's true mother) to nurse and care for him. -This story has a lot of emotion and sacrifice -I would like to rewrite this story into more modern times to help me better understand the story.                                               Pharaoh's Daughter When She Found Baby Moses                                                                  

        -I like how this is written as a poem. -The rhyme scheme is AB, CD, EF, .... -Rama is on his father's throne -There were fourteen bad years prior to this one -The author is describing a lot of people who seem to be very thankful for Rama's ascension to the throne. -There is a party and celebration for the new king -Everything seems to be great because Rama is now the king This image shows Rama taking his father's throne. This story is from PDE Ramayana found here.

Vali's Death: PDE Ramayana -These stories are so interesting -It is important for them to include some kind of family drama, it seems. -The brothers are battling.         -I didn't really understand why he had to kill his brother -Were they on opposing sides of a conflict -The story begins with them arguing -It ends with Vali slain by Rama -This story could be rewritten about brothers who are knights for enemy kingdoms and begin a battle where one ends up fatally wounded.                                            This Photo Shows Rama Killing Vali
