Reading Notes: The King's White Elephant
Reading Notes for The King's White Elephant by Ellen C. Babbitt
-Carpenters who lived on the river bank would go by boat into the forest daily to cut down trees for lumber
-One day an elephant approached the carpenters and was limping. They removed a splinter from his foot and washed out the wound
-Because they had helped him, the elephant wanted to repay them.
-He helped pull down trees, move the lumber, and move their tools.
-In turn, the carpenters fed him well all day
-The old elephant had a son who was all white. He wanted to teach his son how to help the men
-The white elephant helped the men and was fed by the men
-After working all day, the white elephant liked to play in the water with the carpenters' children
-One day the King came and saw the carpenters and he saw the white elephant
-He paid a large price to the carpenters and took the white elephant as his own and took care of him every day.
