Like always, Julia is sitting in a large, plush chair in her
favorite coffee shop in New York City. Normally, Julia would be sitting
peacefully while sipping her coffee and letting the words flow into whichever
story she was writing. Today is different, Julia is tense and cannot find any
words to type into her computer. She is not comfortable and she fears she will
not meet the deadline for a short story that she has been tasked to write.
Julia knows that if she misses the deadline her editor will not be happy.
As Julia sits and contemplates her dilemma and thinks about
how she could fix the issue, her six friends walk into the coffee shop and
slump down on the worn, orange couch. She talks to them about her issue and
they all jump at the chance to help her. Chandler suggests that she do a comedy
bit. Julia quickly shoots this down—she is
anything but comical. Rachel suggests that she write about fashion week; Julia is
thankful for these suggestions, but neither option is something that she is knowledgeable
about enough to write a piece on it. Just when she had lost all hope, Ross and
Monica make a great suggestion. They talk to her and reassure her that there is
nothing wrong with her and that all writers struggle with writer’s block at one time or another.
In order to fix Julia’s
problem, Ross and Monica take her all around the city so that they can help her
find the inspiration she needs to write her short story. They walk all
throughout Central Park, they walk along the river, and enjoy snacking on
classic New York hotdogs with one another. As the day begins to turn to night,
Julia, Ross, and Monica begin to head back to Monica and Rachel’s apartment. As they walk up the stairs to the apartment,
the deadline creeps back into Julia’s
mind. She was having so much fun with her friends that she did not even think
about her short story.
As they entered the apartment, Rachel and Phoebe ushered
Julia out onto the balcony. They had put a comfy chair, a fuzzy robe, candles,
coffee, snacks, and most importantly, her laptop out onto the terrace and made
Julia a temporary haven where she could write her story. The friends told Julia
that they had spent the entire day trying to create a place where she could
write. After talking with her, they quickly hurried inside so that Julia could
have the peace and quiet that she needed.
Julia instantly knew what her short story would be about. She
would write about the importance of friendship and how a good friendship can
benefit a person in so many ways. Julia was very thankful for her friends that day
and all that they did for her.
Author's Note: This story was inspired by The Sandy Road written by Ellen C. Babbitt. In The Sandy Road there is a part in the story where the leader goes in search of water for his men and their animals. He does this not only so that they can survive, but also so that they can accomplish their journey. In my story, I relate what Monica and Ross did to what the leader did.
I saw that you like the Netflix show Friends in your introduction and then saw this story so I thought I should read it. I have never watched Friends, but my roommates do. I think it is interesting how you inspired this story by The Sandy Road. Also, I like how you really describe Julia and give a lot of details about her. This helped me to picture her in my head and make me more interested in the story!
ReplyDeleteHi Bailey! I hadn't seen your project or read any of your stories about Julia before today. I just finished your story from week 11 and I was getting a really strong friends vibe; I was pleasantly surprised to arrive at this story and see that is exactly what you were going for! I'm a huge fan of all things friends, so I'll have to go check out your project!
