Reading Notes: Crossing the River

Image
Reading Notes for Crossing the River    by PDE Ramayana The image above displays the life these people lived "On the River" and within the trees and other greenery. -Why are they in exile? -They all seem to be very sad to be leaving their home -Will everything go back to normal after the 14 years? -Are all of these people brothers? -They are comforting one another because they are far from home. -No one seems very happy about this. -Everyone seems to be helping them even though they are being sent into exile. -In the end they say that they can no longer live life like this, but they just resort to comforting one another. -I wonder if they will enjoy their time or if they will long to be home and have quarrels among them -I would like to rewrite this so that I could give more detail and life to these characters and thicken both the plot and storyline.

Feedback Thoughts

Image
I read about The Psychology of Comparison and How to Stop and Five Steps for Taking Feedback Like a Champ . In both of these articles, the main theme was that everyone feels the pressure of trying to stand up to other people's work and how important it is to stay true to yourself. I learned that although you may be on an uncomfortable platform, it is important to keep doing your absolute best. I also learned that it is important to not compare yourself or your work to anyone else. I definitely think that college is a difficult place to stay away from the trap of comparison, but I do believe that it is important to try our best in order benefit ourselves. I also think that because of the way that we are utilizing feedback in this class, it is also important to remember these things when we are giving feedback to people and that we should keep their feelings in mind as well as we choose our words.                         ...

Topic Brainstorm

Image
Jataka Stories: The Foolish, Timid Rabbit I chose this story as a potential topic because I really enjoyed writing about it this week. I like the story because it is entertaining and it shares a moral. I would like to do more with rewriting and exploring this story and truly learning more and reading different versions. Jataka Stories: The Crocodile and The Monkey's Heart This story is another one that is featured on the Jataka Anthology and I think it is similar in a way to The Foolish, Timid Rabbit. This story is interesting and also teaches a moral. I am not as familiar with this story, but I would really like to be more familiar with it and maybe explore rewriting it. I would like to rewrite it in a similar, but more modern way. Yoga: After learning more about yoga and its Indian origins, I am very interested. Over the past year, I have gotten into doing yoga and I am definitely interested in reading more and learning about the different types and origins of the practice...

Week 2 Story

Image
Find the updated version of my retold story on my website . The Fearful Author On a cold, rainy in New York City, we meet Julia Schriver. Julia was very hesitant to move away from her safe, quiet home in rural Arkansas, but her parents insisted that it was time for her to begin a great adventure on her own. On the inside, she knew that they were correct, she had always wanted this; this however did not make leaving any easier. Julia is a very successful writer and has moved to New York City for new inspiration. Although she seems strong on the outside, she is always fearful that something could go wrong. Loud noises scare her and she takes a while to warm up to new people. Without her mother here to calm her nerves, Julia fears that she will let something small scare her worse than ever before. In spite of her fears, Julia leaves her apartment in The Village and walks to the local coffee shop, this coffee shop is cozy and provides the perfect atmosphere for Julia to write...

Reading Notes: The Foolish, Timid Rabbit

Image
-Similar to Chicken Little - There are a lot of different animals in this story. This makes me think about how one person that has a crazy idea or even a piece of gossip can influence a whole crowd of people.  -As I read this story, I really keep going back to gossip. I assume that all of these animals were not friends, but they all ended up hearing about the Earth breaking up and this affected each of them. This is just like gossip. You may only tell your best friend about some juicy tidbit that you heard, but then she can go tell another friend, and that friend could tell two people and so on and so forth.  -Sometimes we take what we perceive to be happening as fact rather than trying to find out what really happened -This shows me that we should always assess the situation before reacting and letting something small get out of hand.  -What if the Monkeys in the story were looking to make the rabbit uneasy. What if they wanted to cause unrest among...

Exploring Reading Options

Image
After looking through all of the different sources from which we can learn this semester, I have learned that there are a lot of ways and a lot of literature that we can learn about the Indian culture from. It is refreshing to see people and cultures who are dedicated to keeping their traditions and stories alive. This semester I am looking forward to learning through reading , looking at images , and listening to music on YouTube.                                             This is one Folk song that I enjoyed listening to

Time Strategies

Image
Time Management Honestly, time management has never been my strong suit, but I have improved throughout college. As of right now, I have one free day a week and I will probably use this day to do all of my work for the week. This day is never the same, so it will depend on the week which day I complete the work, but I am definitely going to try to stay up to date on tasks and I am going to work on learning how to utilize the class wiki page. I am looking forward to learning how to use a different time management strategy.                   Going to Thunder Games is Something I Will Do After My Schoolwork is Finished

Technology and Using it This Semester

Image
I am looking forward to utilizing new technology that I have not previously had the pleasure of working with. I am generally pretty good at learning how to use websites and social media, but I am excited to be more proficient in things like blog and website building. This setup is a lot different from other online courses that I have taken because it is not on Canvas, but I definitely agree why it is important for us to learn how to use different applications so that when we graduate, we are well versed in many technologies.                                      The University I Can't Wait to Represent in The Workforce

My Assignments for the Semester

Image
This course is very different from anything I have ever done during my time in college. Something I have really enjoyed so far are the stories that were based off of Harry Potter and Gossip Girl. Reading these made me more excited to learn about the Indian culture and how we see it in everyday life. I am also interested in seeing how the storytelling will go throughout this semester. These type of assignments are very different from anything that I have done because my coursework has revolved around concrete facts and reading about history and laws. I am looking forward to this because I will be able to take what we are learning and interpret it and talk about it in my own way and talk about it freely. I also look forward to learning new learning styles that are different than the ones that I have been using.                                            My Puppy, Livvy Like...

Growth Mindset

Image
All About Growth Mindset Prior to this assignment I had not heard about Carol Dweck or the concept of a Growth Mindset. I learned about this concept by reading the transcripts of the videos provided and I was very surprised by how much I learned from these videos. I feel like, in my life I am kind of in the middle in terms of how I utilize a mindset like this. I feel like I am always striving to be better and I want to learn more and do better, but I also know that at times I get discouraged and I feel like I am stuck in a rut. After watching these videos I definitely have a new outlook on learning and how I will approach new concepts. I also think that this is an important thing to be aware of and I look forward to sharing these videos with my family. One particular way that I would like to use this to achieve an academic goal will be next year in graduate school. I know that this will be a new and difficult endeavor and I know that if I go into it by using this growth mindset I w...

Introduction to My Dream Life

Image
All About Me Hello! My name is Bailey DeFilippo. I am a senior political science major. I chose to be a political science major because I wanted to go into federal law enforcement. I have recently changed my academic course and I have decided to go to graduate school next year for social work. I am hoping to be accepted into the Garland School of Social Work at Baylor University. After completing graduate school I would like to go into clinical social work and work with underprivileged children.  Some things that I enjoy are: listening to both country and christian music, watching Friends on Netflix, and spending time with my fiancé and my family. I also enjoy watching my younger brother play basketball and baseball. He has just signed to play baseball at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. We are all very proud of Chase!  I also enjoy traveling with my family. About a year ago, my parent bought an R...

Storybook Favorites

Image
I thoroughly enjoyed this assignment because I was able to learn so much about things that I did not know about before, but I was able to learn these things through reading stories that are similar to ones that I already know and love. Here I will explain and write about three of the stories that I was able to read tonight. Hogwarts: The Loyalty of Brothers         I chose to read this story first because I grew up reading the Harry Potter books and I have always enjoyed them as I got older. Another thing I liked about this story was that it was almost like a lot of the other Fan Fiction that is written about Harry Potter.        The introduction of this story engaged me because I could see the students and the classroom in my mind. I could almost feel the atmosphere coming from the setting that was described in the introduction.        The layout of this story page was, at first, sort of difficult to navigate. I di...

The Guadalupe River: My Favorite Place

Image
Hello, my name is Bailey DeFilippo and one of my favorite places to visit has always been the Guadalupe River in Central/Southern Texas. I like this place because it is laid back and relaxing. When I go with my family, we normally choose one day to relax at the house and swim in the river and we choose one day for our float day. On our float day we spend 5-7 hours literally floating down the river in huge inner tubes. We bring drinks, snacks, a bluetooth speaker, and different water games to play. We spend the day fellowshipping with one another and having a lot of fun in the sun. This place is so beautiful and relaxing.                                      This is a beautiful photo of one part of the Guadalupe River.                               https://www.flickr.com/photos/texasbackroads/21179578893
